Is there a reason why you don't (or can't) use conditional formatting? Seems to be the easiest way to do it rather than via VBA.

On the Ribbon; Home use the paint can. it has a downward pointing triangle, from there select the color that suits you.

thank you, but what i want is the color to change based on the dropdown selection. If i select plywood from the drop down i want cells  A2 and A3 to turn blue, if i choose plastic from the dropdown i want cells B3 and B4 to turn green.
