Hi,
I'm trying to implement a function in my excel sheet without much success this far. Would be very happy if anyone could help me out here.
What I'm trying to do:
I have a list in an excel sheet where I write in instruments that I receive for repair with their serial numbers. The serial numbers can have the shape of GS2-05040023 or simply a number like 1033 and so on. On a different tab in the sheet, I want to be able to write a list of serial numbers that have special properties, i.e. this instrument needs this certain handling. I would preferably not want to sort these in any particular order, just add them in the bottom of the list all the time. When I then write a serial into my main list, I want a cell next to the just written serial to show whether this serial is in the "special" list, to make me go there and check what I need to consider for this individual.
Don't know whether this explanation is clear for anyone, but I hope so.
As said, I would be very happy to receive some kind of feedback on this problem.
Can date serial nembers be changed back to date format? How?
Can date serial numbers be changed back into date format? How?
The old Excel had a bad habit of interpreting everything, that could seem to be approaching a vague similarity to a date value, was immediately treated as such. I thought it a bit annoying, but now I have updated to 2010 and it has become even worse.
Is there a way to limit the values that are automatically converted to dates?

Ok - I am new to using excel but my boss wants me to create a formula or macro or print function or something that will do the following:
She has a one page worksheet with 4 cells. Each cell represents a label for a piece of machinery that we sell. We have hundreds of pieces going out each day. She wants to be able to print many copies of this one page but have the serial numbers ascend automatically. Does that make sense? I hope so....
So for instance:
Cell#1 has serial number RAW52634, Cell #2 RAW52635, Cell #3 RAW52636 Cell #4 RAW52637 . So when we print the first copy the numbers will be correct, but she wants the program to know that on copy 2 the serial numbers should be Cell#1 RAW52638, Cell #2 RAW52639, Cell #3 RAW52640 Cell #4 RAW52641 and so on.
I dont know if this is possible or simple - I don't usually get asked to do these kinds of things. I am just the receptionist....
Thanks for any help....
I've asked this question before, but didnt get an answer that really solves my issue. I have a program that needs to keep track of a number of documents throughout the course of a year. I need to have a serial number for each one that is generated automatically. Thenumber needs to be in the form of YY###, with the YY being the year (i.e. 10 for 2010, or 11 for 2011) and the ### being the number of ducments that have happened so far that year (i.e. 001 for the first document of the year, or 125 for the 125th document of the year.
Is there any way I can do this?
Thanks

Hi,
How can I add a unique serial number to my excel spreadsheet? I have made a document transmittal template and I want a transmittal number on it that will roll over to a new number every time the template is saved (as an excel xls or xlsx file). I'm hoping there is a built in feature that I can use but haven't been able to find it so far.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Mike Bellamy
