Saving Excel in Google Drive

0

Hi all,

I need to save my Excel spreadsheets to Google Drive for sharing.

This is my first time using Google Drive and I noticed that Excel files save as Google Sheet, which is not really Excel, but an Excel look alike, as far as I can tell...

As a result, the interactive elements (spinners) I have included in my files get wiped out, rendering the spreadsheets useless.

Is there a way round this? Can Excel files be saved as Excel files in Google Drive and not as Google Sheets?

Thank you.

I think you need to do 1 or 2 things- in Google Drive, go to Settings (top right) then General. Make sure the item "Convert uploads" is NOT checked (/ticked)- that should stop the file being converted on Upload. Other people should be able to download your original .xls* file,

Then you might like to go  Settings/ Manage Apps and uncheck "Use by Default" against Google Docs. Then an xls* file will display in Google Drive (and have a green marker showing the file extension).

If this works, please remember to mark the Answer as Selected.

Many thanks again, John.

I unchecked both and then downloaded the files once again but they all appear with xlsx extensions and are as before. Am I missing anything?

Zico. Do you mean you checked the spinners were there, uploaded the file (after changing the Drive settings) BUT when they were downloaded as .xlsx format, the spinners have gone? (Note if you try to open a file in Drive, it will use Google Sheets to display it).

I made an Excel file with a form spinner then uploaded it. I opened it in Drive (clicking and Drive using Sheets) and when I went (menu) File/Download> Microsoft Excel, it opened up in Excel, complete with a working spinner. Suggest you try that.

My error. I tried opening it in Google Drive. When downloaded and then opened, it works perfectly!

Many thanks, John.

Have a great day!
