I don't have a barcode scanner but I understand that many USB scanners emulate the action of a keyboard. Does yours do that?
On the printing side, you can use a TrueType barcode font to suit your scanner (but there are several types of barcode, "3 of 9" and QR being common ones, dependent on how much information is to be stored in the code).
