Select one cell in the range you want to apply CF to. I selected the merged cell H4:I4. Note that the cell value always is in the first cell of any merged range. Therefore, aslthough I selected 2 cells, my formatting was applied to H4 only.

Open the CF dialog and select "Use a formula to determine which cells to format". Enter this formula.

=OR(H4>7.5,H4<5.5)

In fact, I entered the formula mistakenly addressing I4 instead but that seemed to make no difference.

Select the formatting you want (red, bold font) and confirm. That takes you back to the CF Manager window where you look for the Applies to field. The rule currently applies to H4:I4. Change this range to inc;lude all the cells you want formatted in the same way. I entered H4:W5. Press Apply and close the dialog.
