Linking 2 Workbooks with Indirect Formula

0

I was wondering if it was possible to link 2 workbooks together and use the Indirect formula.  I sucessfully linked the 2 but when I reopen the workbook that has the Indirect formula without opening the other, I get a #REF in the cells.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

=INDIRECT("'C:\Users\bob\Downloads\[2020 Report Inv.xlsx]1'!C"&((COLUMN()-2)*82)+14)

I am not a fan of linking files. Therefore I found myself in total agreement with the scepsis expressed in this article, which I consulted on your question. I also learned a thing or two about links that I didn't know before, including the fact that "INDIRECT doesn't work with closed workbooks" (in answer to a reader question, after the end of the article).

In my own, personal experience, the writer of the above article is right when he says that linking files is pretty much a beginner's game. My advice is not to use linked workbooks until you are well experienced in all aspects of Excel - and when you have reached that exalted stage you will try hard to avoid linking workbooks.
