Alt + F11 giving a different output than the VBA window

Hi , I keep trying to display the VBA window as you do Don on the Premium course by doing as you do hitting Alt + F11. What happens then is instead of displaying the VBA window I get the following overlaying the Menu Bar at the top of the screen. 

Save - 1, Back -2, Forward - 3, File -F, Home - H, Insert - N, Page Layout - P, Formula - M, Data - A, Review - R, View - W, Developer - L, Help - Y, Tell me what etc - Q. 

There is obviously something in the settings that I need to change, but having seached the settings I dont seem to be able to find anything. Any help would be appreciated.

I have attached (Hopefully) a screen shot to illustrate this.

Hi Jim,

Most likely, you are pressing Alt and then letting that key return to its un-pressed position and then hitting F11. When you just hit Alt and don't hold it down you will see the kind of file menu thing that you are talking about.

Also, if you are on a laptop like me, sometimes you have to press the Fn key in order to use the F keys; if that's the case then you would hold Alt and Fn and then press F11. And, to get rid of the menu overlay once it's there, just hit the Esc key.

Make sure to keep Alt pressed and then hit F11 (or F11 + Fn) and let me know if that helps.

If this still doesn't help, you can just show the Developer tab and use that to get to the VBA window.

Right-click the Ribbon menu > click Customize the Ribbon > in the right side of the window that opens, put a checkmark next to where it says Developer > hit OK.

Now, you should see a Developer tab on the right of your ribbon menu and if you click it you will see a button titled "Visual Basic" on the left side; click that and you get to the VBA window.

Hello Don, Thanks for that answer, yes I am using a Laptop, and pressing the Function key as well has solved the dilemma. I was accessing the VBA window via the Developer tag as you suggested beforehand.
