How to upload attachment

Hi Don,

Chhabi Acharya has a problem uploading an attachment to his question. I hope you can find out what the problem is and cure it.

As an interim measure, perhaps you can retrieve the file from Google and attach it to the question fromyour end.

Thanks for making a question on my behalf. What's more, link doesn't seem embaded. These problems may be related to my browsers or method but I just wonder why these not working at present although they used to in some weeks ago.

Plus, I can't edit my reply in discussions; there is no save option after editing. So I've to delete and post again if any change is to be made.

A large update on the backend was just finalized yesterday and could have caused some issues. I'll look into this and see what I can figure out.

Ok, it works for me when I do it in the test forum, so let's get some more info:
- what country do you access the site from?
- what browser do you use, and which version?
- what opersting system do you use?
- what kind of file did you try to attach?
- when did the issue start exactly?
- Did you say that you also cannot find the "Edit" button for a post(Question or Answer) that you made or for a comment/discussion post or both?

The inbuilt internet browser in my cell with Android 4.4.2 hardly supports this site. However, Google Chrome, as you had suggested to use one year ago, is fine but not all the time (that has caused the current issue) or it could be because your updates were underway (?). Anyway, I succeeded in uploading the file after many attempts but the problem of embedding link couldn't be resolved even after going over some browsers. I thought the code to embade should work with any browser.

I'm grateful to you for your sincere reply and will inform if any problem arises in future.

Thanks a lot!

You're welcome! I'm glad some of it is working. Can you tell me exactly how you tried to embed the link? I'm thinking that maybe one of the backend checks for that feature needs to be changed after the recent update.

Please check my previous question this or this.
Chhabi Acharya (rep: 111) Aug 19, '18 at 7:48 am
Surprised to see this working now but not in those questions!
Chhabi Acharya (rep: 111) Aug 19, '18 at 7:50 am
Ah ok, for the links, this is how it is supposed to work and this is what is happening:

In order to better protect the site and prevent a certain kind of attack, all links must begin with "http" or they will never be translated into links. The links that you linked to are goo.gl/7j5KHp and goo.gl/QufByd

If you go back to those pages and edit your questions but put "https://" or "http://" in front of them, they should work just fine. I know this can be a kind of annoying thing to have to do but it is something that had to be done to better protect the site.

Try editing the links and update me on how it goes.

Working now, thanks!

Don, one of the effects of your recent updates seems to be that your site got even slower than it was before. For the past week or so it regularly takes more than a minute to load a page, to get any response from your site. It's never been really good but there were better times and times that were worse. Now it seems that the worst has become the rule.
Variatus (rep: 4889) Aug 20, '18 at 11:34 pm
Glad it works now!

Variatus, can you give me a link to an example page so I can take a deeper look at it? Some parts of the site load different features and code that can take more time to download.
don (rep: 1989) Aug 21, '18 at 12:16 am
OK. Let's forget about the site loading slowly. Let's talk about switching pages after loading the site. When I "load" the site I get the forum's main page. From there I will either go to one of the questions or to the Alerts page. Both are equally slow. From the Alerts I would follow a link to one of the questions: 45 - 90 seconds. I would then upload an answer or comment: slow but we don't talk about it. Then I would wait more than a minute to return to the main forum and have another wait going from there to the Alerts page again.
When I uploaded the above comment the reaction was so instant it literally shocked me. So I clicked on Edit and the response was also immediate. Amazing! If posting this update takes longer again I shall add another post here. If you see none it was immediate.
Variatus (rep: 4889) Aug 21, '18 at 12:32 am
I continue to observe very fast uploading of comments in the section below questions but, so far, only where no answers exist. I shall be watching for different behaviour where circumstances are not the same as and when the opportunity arises.
Everything else takes at least a minute, sometimes much longer.
Variatus (rep: 4889) Aug 21, '18 at 8:40 pm
I suspect that the system that I use to load files when a country has blocked google is also preventing the caching of the file that is loaded - it is a rather large file. I will do some caching tests and see what I can come up with.
don (rep: 1989) Aug 22, '18 at 4:38 pm
Hi Don,
Have you considered that the current lag in traffic on your forum might be due to the site's slow loading? It takes about a minute to come up at good times. There is a site simulating log-ins from different parts of the world. By my measure it didn't provide accurate information when someone compared my experience with its measurments about a year ago, but perhaps there are more sites than one and, anyway, that might be a starting point from which to tackle the problem.
Regards,
PS.
Chhabi, what is your experience with waiting times for this site to load from where you are?
Variatus (rep: 4889) Sep 3, '18 at 4:44 am
I'm taking a look at the speed today actually. I just looked at the thing that I did to get the javascript file to load for you and it seems like that should not be causing any issues. I tested it by blocking access, using chrome dev tools, and there is no difference, actually, it loads faster that way for me when the file is served from teachexcel instead of google. I'll look into the more general issue of speed today as well. It could be just where you are from and maybe they are throttling US websites, I'm not sure yet.
don (rep: 1989) Sep 4, '18 at 8:21 am
The site has been updated and tweaked, particularly the forum, where I don't allow any social plugins, since they slow page loading. Let's see how it behaves now.
don (rep: 1989) Sep 4, '18 at 11:45 am
Respected Experts,
Sorry for the late reply. I don't have a good access of internet in my area. So, cannot say anything about loading speed as Variatus has inquired.
Chhabi Acharya (rep: 111) Sep 11, '18 at 10:42 pm
Chhabi, it doesn't matter how good or bad your access is. The important thing is the speed of this site relative to other sites offering Excel assistance.
Variatus (rep: 4889) Sep 12, '18 at 5:34 am
Variatus, did it speed up any in the last week? I did quite a few tweaks. However, it seems to not be loading for everyone in IE11, though it works find for me, but that's a separate issue from speed lol.
don (rep: 1989) Sep 13, '18 at 3:08 am
It does seem to be a little less bad today. Let me monitor for a few days and come back here again next week.
Variatus (rep: 4889) Sep 13, '18 at 5:54 am
Ok great. and Make sure to do a refresh or flush of the cache so you can get any updated files as I changed a number of small things in some files.
don (rep: 1989) Sep 13, '18 at 11:00 am
Hi Don,
This past week your site didn't upload noticably slower than others. Most of MS sites come up much faster. Yours is generally a bit slower than SO but not by much, and on par with other Excel sites. I guess it's "mission accomplished". Congratulations, and thank you.
Variatus (rep: 4889) Sep 24, '18 at 5:21 am
YEEESS!!! Im quite happy that it seems to be running better so I can focus on growing it! :)  Thank you for the update!!!
