How to select a checkbox on a protected sheet

Once I protect the sheet I am working on, it also does not allow me (or anyone) to check the checkboxes that I have set up.  I have already selected the checkboxes and selected "unlock", but once I protect the sheet, they act as if they are locked.

Any suggestions?

That said, I dont know how you setup your checkmarks and that changes how to solve the issue. Can you edit your answer and include a sample sheet?
