Conversion from Date to day name

I want to convert a date to a day name for example 30-09-2016 to Fri. Have tried numerous possible solution on google without success.

Use this formula:

=TEXT(A2,"dddd")

Also, make sure your dates are formatted as dates and don't just "look" like dates.

no need for VB here.  See attached file.  Convert your 'Date' to real (normal Excel date), then get the Day name (have both long and abbreviated names).

Don has the proper formula - I just added a conversion of your 'Date'.

It was discovered, as you indicated that the date format in the spreadsheet was not an actual recognised date format. I could not convert it to date format either, luckily the file was not that big.
