How To Have Different Column Widths For The Same Column

How To Have Different Column Widths For The Same Column Excel

I'm trying to have separate column widths in the same column, based on the rows.
the top half of my spreadsheet are assumptions, formatted with the corrects widths needed, but then below I have calculations and such that I do not want the same widths for. how can I lock in the top part so I can decrease the column widths for the bottom half of my spreadsheet?
hope this makes sense.

Hi,
I made a simple worksheet that we have been manually entering the time for employees, but there are too many errors (even with simple math). Can someone help me convert the time of ex: written 84:30 or 103 (meaning 8:00am to 4:30pm) where you have the total weekly hours? Right now I have a column for overtime. Is there a way to automatically calculate the over time also? The work day is 84:30 with a half hour lunch (lunch is not calculated into the hours, so you minus a half hour). 84:30 equals 8 hours. So, if a person works 8am to 6:30pm, how can I set it up where in the first row of time, I will type in 86:30pm. In the totals column to the far right, it will display 8 hours. In the (O.T.) column, it will display 2 hours.
This way, when I call in my payroll, I will have the total "regular" hours in one row and underneath, I will have the total overtime hours.
Or... does anyone have a better solution to keeping track of their hours?
Thanks!
Marty

I have a spreadsheet where I need to calculate the increase in % one year over the other in column D for Eg if Profits are 95415 in Jan 2008 (Column B) and 80215 in Jan 2008 (Column C), then the % Increase will be (9541580215)/80215 *100
I can calculate the formula for this , but the problem comes where for eg there is a loss in Jan 2008 for 95415 and there was a profit in Jan 2007 for 80215. How do I set up formula to take negatives & positives into account in calculating the increase or decrease/

I am puzzled by a thin black line (that looks like a border line) on a spreadsheet that I am unable to remove, whatever I do. It starts halfway across column B and stops just at the end of column Z.
It is not a border line.
It is not a page break.
If I delete the rows it appears on it remains visible.
It is not an object floating on top of the spreadsheet.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

I have two columns in my spreadsheet. Column A has no blank fields, Column B has some blank fields. I would like to show the text from Column A in the same row of Column B only when Column B is blank.
So, basically I'm after: If column B has text, do nothing. If column B is blank, then list text from Column A.
Right now I've created Column C with this formula =IF(ISBLANK(B1), A1. That's working to get the text from A1 when B1 is blank. What can I do/add to get it pull the text from B1 if there is text there? Or...is there a better approach altogether?

I have a spreadsheet with thousands of columns. Due to poor planning on my part I need to insert a column between each existing column (e.g. I need to insert a column between the existing columns A and B, B and C, etc...). I would rather not have to do this manually thousands of times. Is there an easy way to do this?
Thanks in advance.

i've been trying to figure this out on my own but seem to be hitting road blocks.
i have a column of numbers that we extracted from a database as whole numbers. for instance, 30 should be .30 and 100 should be 1.00. when i try to increase or decrease the decimal point it doesn't allow me to convert it to those positions.
would any one have a tip of how i can easily convert this? there are over 2000 entries in my excel spreadsheet so to do it manually would take a lot of time/effort.
thank you!

If you change Excel to Full Screen View and your taskbar is always on top (as

Hi!
I have a question regarding filtering of columns, hopefully someone is able to put me on the right track. I have set up Excel 2007 so that I can click on the dropdown menu in each column to filter them.
However, in my data set there is one blank row separating two set of rows. Now, when I apply the filter on a column, all the rows above the blank row filter correctly, but all the rows below stay unfiltered.
I guess Excel only looks at the consequtive rows, then stops when it hits a blank row. Is there any way of applying the filter beyond a blank row (i.e. the whole column)?
Any advice is higly appreciated.

Sorry for the question. Normally I find answers to my excel questions by going through the help tab or by searching on Google. However, I don't even know what question to ask on this one!?!
Basically I have created a spreadsheet with several columns, but I have one column that lists the shirt size (YS, YM, YL, AS, AM, AL, XL, 2X, 3X) of each person. Is there a formula that I can create that will tabulate the number of sizes (i.e. AS=2, AM=7, etc.)?
In previous years I made a column for each size, and simply placed a "1" in the correct column, and had excel just add the 1's from each column. However, that takes more time and space. I was hoping to streamline it this time around.
Thanks for taking the time to read this post. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks, doug

I am trying to create a formula which will look at the data in columns A I (50 rows) and copy this data to columns K S but ignoring any blank cells. Thereby consolidating the data in the upper rows with no spaces.
I am sure there is a relativley simple answer but it is driving me mad!
Hope you "Guru's" can help

Hi there,
I'm very new to Excel, and I'm having trouble figuring a few things out. Hopefully this will be very easy for you guys!
In Sheet 1, I have a column of cells that I would like to also appear in Sheet 2. If I add a new row to the column in Sheet 1, I would also like it to be updated automatically in Sheet 2. Currently, I can get it to show the contents of individual cells from Sheet 1 in Sheet 2 by using this formula in the formula bar for each cell in Sheet 2:
=Sheet1!A3 (or whichever cell it is)
That's fine, but I'd like to just have a formula that will reproduce the entire column (ie. without a fixed range, as new rows are going to be added to the column).
If anyone could point me in the right direction, I'd be very very grateful. Thanks.

Hi guys,
would really appreciate anyones help with this.
I have a column full of textformatted fractions...
4/5
6/4
3/1
2/5
4/5
etc, etc.....the column is very long!!
I need to convert these to actual fractions...ones I can add to equations, allowing me to multiply and add.
If I highlight the column and goto "format Cells" and change to fraction, the values still stay in the left of the cell.....its only when I manually click on each individual cell, then tick the little green tick, does the cell validate, and the value in the cell moves to the right (and is therefore a proper value).....problem is I have to keep doing this for each individual cell.....and I have 70000+ cells in this column!
Any suggestions on how I could speed this up?
thanks

I have and excel sheet that was a contact list apparently exported wrong and has the names and addresses all together in each cell in about 350 rows in column A, they are all in this format
john doe email address here
for some reason the email address in brackets won't show up here but each email address is in brackets
I need to get the name in one column and the email address without the brackets into another, any ideas?

Column 1 has roughly 20 rows of information. Cell C1 has the formula =A1.
Is there a formula so that when I drag C1 horizontally into D1, E1, F1, ..., the values placed in each cell will be =A2, =A3, =A4, ...
I do not want to transpose the values from column 1 into C1, D1,.... I want these cells to have a formula that links them up to column 1's values
Thanks

Hi,
I use filters a lot at my work. One thing I've noticed is that if I have something filtered and want to copy and paste only what I see from one column to another column right next to it, it will copy what is filtered, but then paste into the unfiltered portion.
Is there some way to copy only what I see when it's filtered, THEN paste only onto the adjancent cells which is also filtered?
For example let's say i have each of the number below in a cell (Fig 1). And then I hide rows 2 3, so only 1 and 4 is showingI only see 1 & 4 in column A. I want to copy and paste 1 and 4 to the next column over one row so it looks like Fig. 2 when unhidden. Not like Fig. 3.

Afternoon all,
I'm hoping someone can help me.
I need to be able to clear the contents of cells in column C, D, E, H if the value of column Q equals HELLO for arguments sake.
Clearing the contents of an entire row is not a problem, however when it comes to resizing rows I seem to come unstuck.

Today I ran into an odd problem. I typed in values for column A rows 1 through 10 then values for column B rows 1 through 10. then in column C, I made the formula C1=A1/B1. The math was correct it showed 542 in the C1 cell. So I dragged that formula down and it showed 542 in all column C cells which is not correct. And when I went to check to see if the formula was correctly dragged it was. For instance, the formula in C2 is =A2/B2 however the value of that cell showed 542 which was not the correct math/value.
But it gets even more weird. When I click on the Column C cells and then it shows the formula up top in the formula bar and if I put my cursor anywhere in the formula bar and hit Return the formula does not change however the correct value then appears in the Column C cell. It is like the act of putting the cursor in the formula activates it to work properly but until it is activated that C cell shows the value of the cell which it was dragged down from.
This is quite bizarre. Has anyone ever seen this before? I have no idea what is going on. I ran a scan for viruses and none were found. I tried it on several new/different spreadsheets but it keeps happening.
Thanks for any tips on this.

Hi
I'm not sure how to do this, but I want the Total (column D) to be the sum of the Unit Price (column C) times the Quantity (column A). Is there a formula you can apply to a column or do I have to do it in individaul cells?

I'm trying to format a worksheet to show how many days overdue certain tasks are, and running into a couple of issues. The sheet is set up with Due Dates in Column A, Days Overdue in Column B, and Date Completed in Column C. My first thought was just to use as simple a formula as possible in Column B =Today()A2. This worked alright for tasks that already had Due Dates assigned, but if Column A was blank I'd get a high number in Column B. I also realized that tasks will continue to show as overdue even after I enter the completedon date in Column C. Is there a relatively simple way to tackle this formula? Thanks in advance for suggestions. (I've attached an example with the column headings I want to use.)
Hi all,
I have a dillemma here,
I have to create a schedule which incorporates lunches automatically (either half hour or 1hour lunches, depending on the circumstances).
The schedule only has time in and time out, but I need excel to automatically deduct the lunch break depending on the circumstance:
If you worked less than 6 hours = no lunch
If you worked more than 6 hours, but less than or equal to 8 hours = 0.5 hour lunch
If you worked more than 8 hours = 1 hour lunch
I am assuming the formula for this will be really long, but I have looked online everywhere and have not found ONE formula for it. I can't put lunch breaks seperately, so all I have to work with is Time in/out.
Also, I wouldn't be able to use military time, so I don't know how excel can assume that time in is in the morning, and time out is in teh evening and/or halfday.
If someone can help it would be greatlyyyy appreciated

Hello
I am trying to understand why I can not use Ctrl+F to find data in Column B, yet I can find the data in Column A.
I have a worksheet that in column A has numbers, in column B, the following formula "IF(ISNUMBER($A1),$A1,"").
Ctrl+F will find numbers in Column A, yet not in Column B. Why is this so? What can be done to ensure Ctrl+F works in Column B?

I have a workbook that has compliance dates in columns "F","G" and "H" from row 7. What I need is when the date in either column comes within 30 days to auto send an email, address in column "A", recipients name in column "B". and then place todays date in column 'P". ALso need to send a follow up email when either date comes within 7days and then place todays date in column "Q". If there is a date in column "P" then don't send email. If there is a date in column "Q" then don't send follow up. Can this be done without the users intervention and each time the workbook is opened.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.
