How do I unlock an Excel File after a crash. It unlocks if I re-boot my
machine, but I am wondering if there is a lock file in some temp directory
that I can delete instead of re-booting

Thanks

I have an excel file with hyperlinks that point to the network directory. After a crash MS-Excel offered to re-store the excel file saved just before the crash. I did that and now all the hyperlinks point to the local /Documents & setting/ user directory
How can I restore all the hyperlinks to the correct destination.

I tried with 'replace' but that did not work. HELP.

Thanks.

Hi there,

Hoping someone can at least provide suggestions?

When editing a particular excel file and saving it will give a "send to microsoft" error with very little detail. It will also not delete the temp file created when opening the file so each time I try save it creates a new random file in the directory and eventually I have a long list of random files accounting for every attempt. The changes are also lost.

Now this only happens on one particular workstation but not on another. They both have exactly the same Excel installed. They both have the same XP installed (image). I have also tried uninstalling and re-installing excel on the problem PC. No luck. It also does not matter if the file is on network or local. The logged on user also has full permissions and ownership to the troublesome file. Nothing I do can explain why it is only problematic saving on the one PC but not on any other.

Any suggestions as to what else I can do for this sort of problem? As per corporate policy we are stuck with Excel 2000 for a while still.

To elaborate how it will crash, if say I change the color of a particular word I chose in the spreadsheet and save, then it will crash. Some other things cause it to crash after saving but some changes made don't cause it to crash. As I said though this is only on a particular PC but no other and said Excel document is almost 13meg with a lot of references and sheets...so recreating the document would be a nightmare.

Hi,

We have a file that needs to be updated monthly by running macros, but the macros are being blocked by protection. I would like to put some code at the start of the macro that unlocks all sheets and then at the end locks them up again. Actually, all I really need is a macro to do just that unlock all sheets, and then another one that locks them back up again as we will need to lock and unlock at various times and it is annoying to have to do it by sheet.

The password is "ou" I do not know if that matters.

If this macro is possible, will it keep the selected parameters that you check when you go in an protect something?

Thanks tons in advance.

A collegue of mine has suffered a systen crash and is now unable to access his Excel files.

When he attempts to open the files he is getting the message that the files are locked, and may be in use by another user.

Is there a workaround to unlock the files and gain access to them, with opening as read only and saveing as?

Is there a lock file which can be deleted to allow access to the file.

Any help greatly appreciated to avoid the neccessity of opening and re-naming a large amount of files.

Thanks

Gary

The attached file is the worksheet that I am working on. I was told that if I could get around merging cells it would be to my benefit. I am hoping that if I can get around merging cell h7-ac7, I can use h7 and write code that locks/unlocks g12. I centered across selection and was able to not merge g12 but with h7, if I do the same thing, I can not view the validation list.

Basically I need to use h7 to control locking or unlocking g12 (if h7="Grass Fire" or "Timber Fire" unlock g12 or else lock g12. I have not had any luck at this. Maybe someone has an idea. Any other suggestions on the form would be appreciated. This is my first excel project where any type of code was written and I am unsure of where to go at this point.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

I have worked with a file (MS Excel 2007) for a number of months without problems. Since a few days the file has started to crash the excel (Message Excel will close down...) and a small file is created. When I open this file in Notepad it reads Root Entry and a lot of crap caracters. I have tried older copies but when I work with them I also get the error after having worked for a little while.

The file is approx 11MB and has a number of smaller macros and formulas. I have done some changes lately but I can not find out what it is that triggers the crash.

Does any body have any idea???

I am trying finalize a process that ftps files to a unix server. This process sporadically crashes during testing.

Below is an outline of what the process does.

Call ExportCSV
Create a .CSV file for export and save it to the C drive
Copy and paste values and formats from 4 seperate but contiguous ranges (ie using pastespecial)
Save .CSV
Close.CSV
End Sub

Call CreateBAT
Print text to batch file
Close batch file
End Sub

Call CreateTXT
Create a Notepad File for output
Print server credentials, instructions, etc to notepad file
Close Notepad file
End Sub

Call SendFile
Open batchfile and FTP
Wait 3 seconds
End Sub

Call KillFiles (currently commented out to observe files)
delete all files in directory
End Sub

The macro does not always crash. But it seems that when if it does crash that it has only pasted partial data to the .CSV file for export. Could this crash be fixed by inputting a DoEvents in between the CreateCSV module and the Create Batch module?
It seems a few users experience a majority of the crash instances. Maybe they have too much open on their desktop?

I have a fairly large file (13Mb) which works fine. However, the users now want me to develop it further. When I insert a new sheet, I can carry on working on it and it saves OK. However, when I reload the file, it causes Excel to crash.

Its driving me berserk. Has anybody got any ideas?

No idea whether this is even possible, BUT here's my question:
Can you apply a conditional lock to a cell? I'm envisioning a formula that looks something like this:
IF A1 = "New Hire" then unlock A2, otherwise VLOOKUP..etc..
so A2 would have a different lock/unlock status depending on the value entered in A1.

Of course, there might also be a completely different way of looking at the problem, but I haven't thought of one.. thus my difficulty in searching for solutions.

Thanks for any help!

Hi,
When i use the Pl/sql developer function 'copy to excel', it creates/opens
an excel file for me in the "c.\...\temp" directory".
Now when I am in this file and I use the file/open and file/save commands excel defaults to the "c.\...\temp" directory".

I was wondering if anyone knows how to change the path of the file/open file/save as commands.
I would like to be able to save the file right at the "c:\" directory.

I am using excel2000 and windowxp.
If you need any more info, just ask. I am not very computer literate.

Thanks

Excel 2007 has been crashing.

There doesn't seem to be a common point at which the crash occurs. It is not when I open the workbook. This last crash occured when I closed a custom .chm file I had created. This is the first time I can recall a crash from closing the help file.

Interestingly, when this crash recovered, two items I had added to my Quick Access Toolbar (QAT) were visible. I've tested it and this doesn't occur when SP2 of Office 2007 has been applied, any changes to QAT are gone.

My Question....
Is there a way to determine what caused a crash? Or a log that shows the last thing Excel was doing?

Environment background
It is a fresh install on Windows 2003 Server and the install of Excel is maybe a week old. All updates have been applied and no add-ins into Excel have been loaded. The spreadsheet is moderate in size, current running at 4,336KB. I do have large formulas (everything is relative, 2,115 characters). I have some vlookups (around 120 of them) into a table of 7,000+ rows. These are things I can convert to VBA to reduce my formula size and also take care of the vlookup which can be done another way.

It seems some how I made the mistake of locking (i.e., not allowing editing) to most or all of my workbooks. Don't know how, but I want to unlock all workbooks if possible so that I do not have to open and unlock each one separately, and then have to make a copy of each workbook.

1. Is it possible to unlock all at one time??

2. Is it possible to prevent locking any/all workbooks??

3. I am the only user, and I do not want/need to lock any workbook.

Thanks.

Hi,

I am working with PL/SQL developer and when I use the copy to excel function it opens/creates an excel spreadsheet for me in the temp directory. Now when I am in this excel spreadsheet, the file/open and file/save as commands go to the temp directory. (My default file location is 'c:\'.)
I was wondering if there is a macro that will change the path of
the file/open and file/save to something other than 'c:\....\temp'.
I would be happy if they were just my default location for now.

I am using Excel2000 and windows xp.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

I have an excel file that was around 40MB. Obviously way to big. It was functioning properly for months though. All of the sudden it began to crash. I update/modify and create new formulas in this model quite frequently. I cant pinpoint what I did that is making it crash. At first I thought it was just the size, so I broke the model into 2 files which drastically reduced the size. Everything worked ok for a day or two and now it's crashing again. One of the files is 30MB and works fine, the other is about 7MB now and that's the one that is now crasing again. So leads me to beleive it was never the size, but rather a formula or link that is causing excel to crash. This file is months and months of work and progress that I would rather not trash and have to start all over.

Are there any ways to determine what is casuing the file to crash? Any way to maybe pinpoint a problem formula or link... Any diagnostic tools or something. In need of big time help. Thanks in advance.

I want to copy a file to **. Machine won't do it because of error. "Facility
Schedule-Staff visits 1-8-05.xls is locked for editing by Margie (that's me)
.. Open read only or click 'Notify to open read-only and receive notification
when the document is no longer in use." How do I give myself to unlock?
Microsoft Professional 2003, Excel.

Ok, I know this has been asked and I know part of the answer. But I think I have a unique situation. (maybe).

I've got an excel file that compiles information and then breaks out the information into multiple workbooks using VBA. I copy code into the new workbooks for additional functions and due to some of the specifications I need to lock the sheets with a password but still allow some sorting. Which means I need to unlock and re-lock the sheets. Now putting in a password programmatically to lock/unlock sheets is no big deal. However, I need to lock the code up from viewing to prevent people from getting the worksheet password.

Is there a way to lock the VBA project programmatically after I transfer the code?
Or does anyone have a creative suggestion?

Hi Everyone,
as I am new to all the VBA stuff I have most proberbly some silly questions or fault.
Anyway we all have to start somewhere I guess. So hope someone can tell me the correct code so that works for mee.
I have an lock button to lock a worksheet, and a unlock button to unlock the same worksheet.
The unlock button though gives me an error when I don t set the password correct or not at all.
My code is like that

Sub UnlockSheet()
'
' Unlock Sheet Makro
'
'
ActiveSheet.Unprotect
End Sub

I am sure that is very simple for you guys here but for me a problem I can not figure out yet why.
Please help me with this it would be much appreciated

Thanks

Argh!

I am working in a file and I go to do something and Excel crashes. I get the message

"Excel.exe has generated erros and will be closed by Windows. An error log will be generated."

I lose all of my current changes. Sometimes when I perform a specific action (for example refresh a certain pivot table) I can get it to crash.

The problem is that it seems to be totally random. It used to be when I had done a bunch of things that it would crash. Recently it has been even the most simple things (copying or editing a cell) have made it crash.

Anyone else experience this? How did you fix it?

any help is much appreciated. This is getting to be like Groundhog day. I have re-opened the same file about 6 times in the last 15 minutes and not gotten anywhere.

thanks
